A little over a week ago, a friend gave me a beautiful bouquet of peonies. I love the flower, but I’d never received a bouquet of them before. Their season is short, and I seem to miss them most years. And while I love flowers and often have fresh-cut blooms in my home, these have made me thoughtful. So, I thought I’d share a little photo essay this week.

Day 1: Bright, Fuchsia Buds

When I first put the buds in a vase, they were tight, bright balls of dark pink. The hue was gorgeous, and the promise of their beauty was clear.

Day 3: Big, Bold Blossoms

Midway through the week, the buds had opened, beautiful and audacious.

Day 6: Stately White Blooms

After several days, the flowers turned white. They were fully open and striking, but had no sign of their former hue. Still beautiful, they looked as if they had transformed.

By Day 7, petals were dropping off, and the flowers had run their course. Peonies don't give us a lot of time to appreciate them. In contrast, a few months ago, a friend sent me roses that lasted nearly three weeks. Their longevity was remarkable, and we began to joke that there were supernatural forces at work.

But isn’t that part of the wonder of flowers? In many ways, they remind me of people. Some blooms are fleeting and fragile. Others, like alstroemeria, can last two weeks or more. All of them are beautiful in their own ways and on their own timelines.

That’s my meditation for this week. I keep looking for the beauty and wonder, sometimes struggling to find them. Where are you seeing them? Let me know at connect@bloomanywhere.com.
